Burgers’ Zoo in the Dutch city of Arnhem showcases animals from around the world on approximately 45 hectares. From the ocean to the rainforest and the desert, the natural habitats of the animals have been recreated. The visitor’s experience plays a central role in the philosophy of the Arnhem Zoo throughout. An extraordinary view offers the playground opposing the large outdoor terrace of the restaurant. It is the perfect complement to an adventurous visit at the zoo. Burgers’ Avonturenland (Adventure Land) extends over an area of approximately 1,000 m2. The play offerings for small children are placed near the terrace, and behind them unfolds the large climbing jungle, which adults also enjoy exploring. Due to the natural form and structure of the robinia wood, the expansive climbing and balancing landscape appears like an impenetrable jungle, culminating in a huge beaver dam. The green-yellow accents of the play area support this impression. At every position in the jungle, there is something to discover – a new path through balancing, climbing, or sliding, a new hiding spot, or a sensory game. A highlight is the triple wave slide, where you can challenge your friend to a race. Barrier-free access is possible via a wide wooden bridge. Various rotating games with play options are also available here.

The pier and the promenade in Grossenbrode were renovated and expanded in keeping with the motto “MeerZeit” (“more Time”). According to a design by the Siller office in Kiel, a spacious play area was modeled on a “treasure island” in the first construction phase. As on a treasure map, there are different locations on hills and in valleys. The hills are secured with a non-slip EPDM surface, the valleys are filled with fine Baltic Sea sand. High palm trees give the playground a South Sea flair. A five meters high pirate hideout is perched on a 1.2 meters high hill. Experienced climbers can make it to the 3.5 meters high platform. From there you have a great view of the playground, the promenade and the Baltic Sea. A long tunnel slide takes you back to the bottom of the hill. A stone’s throw away you will find the next hill that keeps new adventures. Through a labyrinth of climbing and balancing elements, the children reach the next hill over a 17 meters long bridge. Two oversized treasure chests determine the hill panorama. A large area of sand extends in front of the hills. There is a multi-play combination for small children consisting of boxes and bridges. The bars can be used as a chill out area. Find a hammock between two palm trees in the toddler area. Larger children can swing high up into the air on multiple swings in the next area. A four meters long crocodile works as a border between these two areas.

After all the best way to convince yourself of the quality of our work is to experience it live and visit this very special playground.

Tropical Islands, in the Dahme Spree district, has officially opened the expansion of its resort after an eleven month construction period and a trial run of several weeks. 135 more houses have been added to the existing 113 holiday homes and the outdoor campsite. With the expansion, Tropical Islands is reacting to the steady increase in overnight guests in recent years. With 710 rentable units and a total of 2,591 beds,it is one of the largest accommodation providers in Germany. The traditional cutting of the opening ribbon by Wouter Dekkers, General Manager of Tropical Islands, and Jörg Steinbach, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Energy of the State of Brandenburg and Stephan Loge, District Administrator of the Dahme-Spreewald district took place on September 7, 2020 and opened the new holiday home area for guest use.

There are also smaller and larger playgrounds from SIK-Holz® between the accommodations, which have been named «Sunrise Homes». They offer an attractive contrast program in the shade of Brandenburg pines and a quiet atmosphere with an exquisite view of the tropical hall. Some of the playgrounds are positioned directly between the holiday homes. The play areas serve as a meeting point, for orientation and as a lounge area, before or after an eventful day on the Tropical Island or the wider area. Small children can move around independently in the adult’s field of vision and make friends with other children. The adults also come into contact with one another in the surrounding of the playgrounds. A larger climbing forest is located at the entrance to the resort. Older children who are a bit more mobile meet here. In addition to experimenting with sand, exercise should of course not be missing. So you can swing, balance or climb. The bigger ones can show their dexterity on the horizontal bar and their strength on hanging structures. The play areas also show excerpts from the diversity of the Brandenburg region. The children can hang around and climb in a «Brandenburg birch forest», venture into the «Spreewald river landscape» or explore the «world of bees» between the beehive and the beehive.

The existing road network around the area was also fundamentally renewed in the course of the expansion. Wouter Dekkers is particularly proud of the new reception building. Here, too, a small play area has been created to get in the mood for the holiday in case there are waiting times at the check-in.

«Reach for the sky» is the name of an impressive project of the Japanese Denpark. Denpark is a part of the megacity Anjõ in the province Aichi. Only a tiny piece was missing and you could have reached the sky literally. The high-rise towers designed by Klaus-Peter Gust were built within two month at the playground manufactory in Langerlipsdorf. The whole ensemble seems like the oversized adventure land from the kingdom of Maya the bee. In October 2017 engineers from Tokyo accompanied the pre-assembly in Langenlipsdorf under the supervision of Kuni Ushio, the purchasing manager of BorneLund (Bornelund is the name of our sales partner in Tokyo). During the pre-assembly, the engineers of BorneLund documented their observations carefully to make sure that the reconstruction will not go wrong and that everything will be according to the Japanese standards.

Before the Brandenburg Robinia woods went on their travel halfway around the world from the seaport Hamburg the components were disassembled, labeled and loaded in to eight 40ft container. Four weeks later our installation manager Markus Bollinger-Röttig set out for Denpark to support the Japanese colleagues during the complex playground installation.

On 17. March 2018 the new playground were passed to the children and visitors of Denpark in Anjo. After cutting the red tape by the Major of Anjo and the Danish ambassador, more than 580 children flooded across the playground world while having marvelous sunshine and a bright blue sky. It was amazing to see how the children roamed the playground with a secure agility, joy and speed and how they took possession of the playground self-evident. It was a beautiful moment for Klaus-Peter Gust who was invited to the grand opening ceremony of the children’s playground by the management of BorneLund Mr. and Ms. Nakanishi. BorneLund runs 90 outlets from Hokkaido to Kagoshima and offers roughly 3,000 products. The wares include toys imported from some 100 companies in about 20 countries, and those it has developed on its own. BorneLund also runs over 20 Indoor- and moving areas. In these areas are more than 10 conceptual SIK-Holz® play and moving structures installed.

In Japan it is usual to play in air-conditioned areas. The temperatures in the summer are often rising over 35 degree with high humidity so every movement is difficult. In the winter it is very cold. Up to this point, there are less creative SIK-Holz® playgrounds in the Land of Smiles and of the rising sun. For this reason this project is an important step to bring out the main points on Japanese playgrounds.

A particular attention goes out to the playground sign. Here is not only to see the presentation of a secure usage of the play equipment but also hints for the good quality from Germany and the origin of the wood from sustainable managed forests in Brandenburg. The playground sign give also the hint that in Jüterbog is the most beautiful town hall in Brandenburg.

The city of Burg is arranging the fourth state horticultural show in Saxony-Anhalt. True to the motto – horticultural show is city show – it connects people and nature. The old town as a complete ensemble defines Burg, as it borders directly on the garden show areas Goethepark, Flickschupark and Weinberg and integrates them into the exhibition concept. With a varied program and under the aegis of the Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff the state horticultural show where ceremonial opened on April the 21st. All elements of the state horticultural show Burg 2018 are based on the existence of historical buildings, plantings and gardens and will evaluate these in terms of content and appearance. The state horticultural show will change the face of Burg formative and permanent.

For the design of the play areas in the Goethepark and Weinberg, the landscape architects Relais from Berlin accomplished a two-level competition. SIK-Holz® awarded the contract for Weinberg. The spatially dominant chimney of the company Aston on the «Weinberg» considered due to its urban historical significance as a theme for the designing of the environment. Areas of brick gravel and dry vegetation strengthen the previously industrial character of this place. The resulting venue should capture playfully the structure of the chimney in the way of two climbing towers. On an area with only 120 m² should be developed play proposals for children aged three years.

The splitting into different age groups succeeded by dividing the area in a factory with less heights and many proposals for role plays and a high climbable chimney for older children. The factory regard to the different phases of the industrial history from the steam generator to a modern factory building. A parcours made of pipes connects the preindustrial steam generators with the factory. It is a barrier between the play areas and also meant as an action space for small children in which they can orient themselves. Hammock and seating platforms on the pipeline course also invite adults to participate in the game. The pipeline is at the same time a telephone system with different voice stations between steam boiler and factory. The chimney has a strong external appearance due to its height and colours. On different levels, larger children can play on the tower and enjoy a panoramic view of the garden area from a secure hiding place.

The Intratuin in Dutch Duiven has become a place of pilgrimage for all garden lovers. Last year, the sales area was expanded from 16,000 m² to 24,000 m². Due to this expansion all article groups were updated. From field green to the ceramic department and the greenhouses to the animal department every visitor finds what he needs. The owner family of the Intratuin was not only interested in a larger sales offer for this investment. With real experiences the owner family wanted to face of the competition of the internet trade.

All senses are addressed here in varied ways. Thus, a greenhouse of the garden center was transformed into a restaurant with 1000 seats that attends with botanical and oriental designed adventure zones. Additionally to the restaurant there is the Klimtuin a huge adventure playground which is a mecca for children and parents because also the parents are investigating twisty lanes between the huge climbing tree and the tree houses with panoramic view.

The huge climbing tree with all its attachments takes a volume of about 10 × 10 m. Its widely ramified root system offers countless climbing and crawling tunnels and in the trunk are climbs to huge bird’s houses or to a motley caravan. The conclusion is a real tree that grows from the center of the wooden tree roof. A labyrinth of bridges leads from the climbing tree over intermediate platforms to the 6 and 7.5 m high panorama tree houses. From here you will arrive back to the ground over long tubular slides. Even here is a lot to explore. Low balancing parcours between posts designed as blades of grass and playhouses fill the areas under the bridges.

The design of the play paradise is based on the assortment of the garden center. There is hardly a square meter of the approximately 20 × 26 m large courtyard, on which not a wooden specimen of flora or fauna can be found. Everywhere there is something to discover. Here a flower, a ladybird, a bird or a squirrel, fishes which are seesawing and even a crocodile head sticking out of the ground. Those who do not move through the playing area are sitting there wondering about this wooden fairytale landscape.

The unique play area is originated from the design to the ceremonial opening by SIK-Holz® in five month.

The universe includes everything that exists, space and time, matter and energy. It preoccupies the natural sciences and philosophy and provides plenty of material for fantastic stories that people like to read and play.

Since a few months a galactic backdrop for space games is available on the new created playground on the Goerdelerstraße in Hamburg. The non-profit Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Bergedorf-Bille eG devotes much attention to the renovation of playgrounds in their residential areas with regard to the youngest members. Many of the outdated playgrounds were redesigned according to suggestions, hints and ideas of local residents.

For the outside areas in Goerdelerstraße, Benthin’s office in Neustadt / Holstein planned two large play areas with bordering seating areas and exercise courses for adults. One playing area was designed with the focus on sand play and the other with the focus on movement play by SIK-Holz® consultant Ulrich Probst-Schneidereit. Both play areas also encourage role-plays. In the sand play area it is a small robot and rocking space vehicles.

Three large objects, a space temple, a battle star and a space helmet dominate the large range of motion. All three objects have different shapes and colors. The space temple shines in yellow-red colors, while the battle star and the space helmet recede in an anthracite-yellow color combination in the perception. Latter are connected with a balancing combination. In their middle part are shining colored light swords. The three objects offer large spaces above and below the platforms. Through a variety of entrances and exits, many different exercise offers and play loops arise.

A thin snow blanket covers the playground of the Atolls in Schwerin. There was no more winter in this year. The colorful volcanoes cast a spell over their observers in this small winter landscape. This playground was raised in the context of the National horticultural show 2009. Since that time the playground enjoys great popularity. The playground is not far away from the Lake Schwerin and paths edge him. During spring in 2018 both origin volcanoes were remoted for safety related reasons. A repairing of the panel material proved to be gainless.

It was very important to the city to approve the playground as soon as possible again. SIK-Holz® representative Patrick Chiraux has been consulted for finding a solution that he developed with his colleague Sabrina Stolz in a short time. The new volcanoes are completely made of Robinia wood. If the volcanoes will be cared and maintenance regular and proper, they will survive their predecessors for numerous years.

The volcanoes are on a base area of approx. 10 × 7 m. The large volcano has a height of approx. 6.0 m. His small neighbor has a height of approx. 4.0 m. Via many platform level and ladders the enthusiastic mountaineers are able to reach a tubular slide with height of 3.8 m in the large volcano or rather a slide with a height of 2 m in the small volcano. Both slides are leading back to ocean of atolls. The contorted entrances and exits provide interesting niches for hiding and they are popular meeting places away from the view of the outside world for adolescents.

In addition to ascents inside, the platforms also can be reached from the outside via climbing- and net walls. The generous climbing area is also suitable for bouldering and so the volcanoes are compact climbing objects. In addition to the varied play offer, the two volcanoes attract attention due to their intense colored design from a distance. These are the reasons why this why this playground is an attractive destination at the lake Schwerin.

There are stories that are timeless. The books in which those stories are written in will maybe re-illustrated over years but the enthusiasm for their heroes remains. One of these stories for example is «The Jungle Book» written by Rudyard Kipling. Since more than over 100 years, generations of children read this book. Among the best-known stories in the Jungle Book are the stories of Mowgli, a foundling raised in the Indian jungle who is saved by the caring by some animals. On the other hand, other animals are not well disposed to him. So Mowgli has to learn quickly to distinguish between friend and foe. Due to the many adventures, which Mowgli experiences in the jungle, he becomes a hero and a friend in the child’s imagination. The important reasons for the popularity the «Jungle Book» are of course the music and the plays which are caused by the stories of the «Jungle Book».

As early as 1998, SIK-Holz® built the first jungle playground in Berlin Charlottenburg. As in the previous year’s Andreas Schmidt, a planner of the urban green space planning office addressed it. The «Jungle Book» was part of his children’s literature too.

The approximately 400 m²-sized playground is located in the Eosanderstraße. This is a typical gap from World War II, which is surrounded by a small green area and a few trees. In the back part of this area is ball play area. This area is separated from the playground. A low fence with a high entrance made of palm trees with a sleeping Bagheera forms the separation to the street. The playground looks like a stage in the theater where the «Jungle Book» will be performed every day. This playground especially affects to be visited by the surrounding kindergartens. The individual play elements are tailored to this age group.

The children seesaw, turn and swing with Mowgli, Baloo, King Louie and Shere Khan. They balance on the snake Kaa or climb and slide in the jungle play unit. Because everywhere is sand on this playground the children can dig extensively. Due to the popularity of this playground the former development was adapted. Here only the arrangement was changed a little bit. New additions are many tiny hummingbirds. With their colorfulness the hummingbirds enchant and they provide a very special flair to this small jungle in the big city.

In memory of the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach, the playground on the street named after him has been redesigned in Monheim. SIK-Holz® consultant Martin Heumüller designed a small wooden orchestra in response to the city of Mohnheim’s call for tenders for the redesign.

At the centre is a combined play equipment with the look of a big contrabass for climbing over, crawling into it and sliding down. Climbing ropes in the form of score lines connect the contrabass with a piano keyboard for balancing. The combination offers ever new starting points for activity trails and is at the same time a retreat with little hiding places.

A small sand construction site in the form of two large drums offers creative and persistent play opportunities. For reasons of preserving a peaceful neighbourhood, the lack of a sounding board will unfortunately not allow for a musical drum experience. The drums are rather used as baking surfaces. Sand elevator, chute and sieve support playing with the element sand. Flutes and a clarinet also belong to the small playground orchestra. Two to four children or even adults can seesaw together on the clarinet. At the same time, the clarinet is also a place to sit and observe. On the swing between the flutes even very young children can independently swing back and forth

The concept had been agreed as part of the Playground Commission with representatives from politics, youth parliament and local residents. The sturdy green framework and a robust seating arrangement make the playground an attractive family meeting place in the neighbourhood.
