Indoor port for a family park

The family park Senftenberger See, with its own sandy beach and located in the middle of a pine forest, is ideal for a relaxing holiday close to nature. Families in particular will find plenty of offers here. In addition to outdoor playgrounds and a miniature golf course, there is also an indoor playground for bad weather. A harbor scenery was designed here. The main eye-catcher is a large play ship with a lighthouse. A staircase leads to the bow of the ship. The different platform heights of the upper deck and the built-in play walls provide plenty of scope. Sensory games on the walls increase the length of stay. The floor is partially perforated with horizontal nets through which the game below can be observed. They also increase attention when walking over them. Below deck there is a sensory avenue of hanging ribbons and ropes that appeal to the senses. From the stern, you can go over a pier to the lighthouse and back down to ground via a tunnel slide or stairs. The bathhouse offers a ball pit for romping around or relaxing. In the middle of the room there is a large mobile construction site with foam blocks, next to it there is a parking lot for bobby cars, which race over the wave bridge and through the construction site. A harbor pub for role-playing games, a hotel as a quiet area and a small hands-on theater are also planned.

Octopus in sight

Approaching an octopus can be difficult because it is shy and can camouflage itself very well. Not so with the large wooden squid at Camping Park De Paardekreek on the Veerse Meer in the Netherlands.

The camping park has an indoor playground ready for bad weather. Here the big octopus dominates in front of a small port town. Between the houses and the octopus it goes up and down over bridges and ropes or through tunnels. The height of the platforms vary between 0.6 and 2.7 m. A spiral tube slide takes you back to the ground quickly and directly from the head of the giant octopus. Many sensory games are integrated into the multi unit and ensure short or long stopovers. Opposite the play area there is a stage from where the daily children’s program starts. To the right and left of the stage are two small play areas for role-playing games.

Get to know mice while playing

An old farmhouse stands in the middle of the Rheine nature zoo. Inside, you have your own little «mouse» world. The indoor playground primarily picks up on the connection between children and mice. In addition to observing real mice, the children can playfully imitate the behavior of the mice. The main focus is on climbing, dangling and hiding. But also fine motor movements are encouraged by topic-related meaning games, distributed over the entire scope. The toddler area, consisting of a small course, visually depicts the natural habitat of the mice. This is followed by a climbing and hiding facility for small children. It visually represents the transition between the natural habitat of the mouse and an environment shaped by human hands, which the mice have also successfully conquered as cultural successors. The core of the play area are accessible boxes and barrels, which are connected by a mesh tunnel. The play area meanders from the ground to the attic. Once at the top, the children can slide back down to the lower floor or watch the animals in the zoo through the attic windows. To counteract the darkness, there are always «feeding holes» on the boxes. Visitors can take a break in the adjacent cafe. Here too, of course, little wooden mice dance around on the tables.

Exciting world travel

Travelling through the universe is an excellent idea for thematic playground creation. The children move from one theme world in the next, while playing. From town, through mountains, the sea and around the earth, until they reach the space. Playing together helps the children to learn more effective. The complex connection of nature, society und environment are better experienced by playing. The new indoor-hall of Ketteler Hof is a terrific example.

About one year ago the owners of the adventure park invited the most creative designers and manufacturers of playgrounds, to create a new attraction with their spectacular ideas and skilled craftsmanship for entertaining the little conquerors, discoverers and environmentalists. The different planning teams worked out one or several scenes each. The owner family and the planning teams managed it very good to fulfill the design approaches and connected everything to a huge playable journey around the world.

All embracing the company SIK-Holzgestaltungs GmbH had the task to bring a piece of the space to Ketteler Hof. To fullfill this task we had a room with about 1,350 m³. Playing through a room with dimensions like this, is a magnificent experience for children. There is no up or down in space. Everything is always moving. We brought an UFO in position, which is flying towards our planetary system. Five Planets hover as spherical capsules, connected through bridge-systems through the room. Whenever the children step out of the UFO in 5 meters height, they will soon discover what keeps the world together. They get to learn the infinite distances of the universe.

Child’s play is not planable. The fantasy and idea diversity of children is simply endless. We, the playground-designer, can only give them a frame to ensure a development-promoting play. Even Goethe let the director on stage speak 250 years ago: «On the German stage, you see, Everyone tries out what he can: Don’t fail to show me, I’m your man, Your trap-doors, and your scenery. Use heavenly lights, the big and small, 235 Squander stars in any number, Rocky cliffs, and fire, and water, Birds and creatures, use them all. So in our narrow playhouse waken The whole wide circle of creation, 240 And stride, deliberately, as well, From Heaven, through the world, to Hell.»
