At the Ketteler Hof, a new play sculpture is capturing attention and getting visitors moving. Visible from afar, the almost seven-metre-tall squirrel impresses with its striking silhouette and immediately invites children to explore.

Inside, a varied climbing world awaits, featuring different routes up, small hiding places and lovingly designed play elements. A special highlight is the integrated quiz: in a playful way, children learn fascinating facts about the life of squirrels. To find the correct answers, they must count, search and combine – keeping both body and mind equally engaged.

The adventure continues around the sculpture as well: a versatile climbing and balancing course with different heights and transitions challenges courage, coordination and teamwork.

The installation offers plenty of space for imagination, shared experiences and extended playtime – bringing together movement, learning and adventure in a truly unique way.

A very special relationship connects horse and human, which has profoundly shaped history since the Middle Ages. These graceful animals found their way to humans as working animals, but nowadays they mean much more to people. They are loyal companions and are loved as family members. It’s no wonder that SIK-Holz® has now brought a rider’s playground made of robinia wood to life in the city of Braunschweig.

The approximately 4-meter-high horse not only delights animal lovers but also adventurers of all kinds. It can be completely explored and climbed from head to the tip of the tail. It features a climbing wall, sliding poles, and climbing nets. The accompanying rider, as a climbing tower, is an indispensable highlight that offers a great view of the playground. For those who find this challenge a bit too much, they can have fun on the small spring rockers and pony sculptures. Whether black, white, or spotted horses are preferred, there is a suitable sculpture for everyone. Since the entire facility is set up like a lunge circle, obstacles are, of course, a must. Here, they serve as balancing obstacles that train hand-eye coordination through rotatable logs.

We would like to thank everyone involved in this project and wish all visitors a great time in Braunschweig.

In Waren an der Müritz, fans of the prehistoric era can expect a new highlight. The lakeside has been adorned for some time with an almost life-sized woolly mammoth, whose magnificent tusks are not made of ivory, but, like the rest of the mammoth, crafted from robinia wood. The SIK-Holzgestaltungs GmbH has transformed tree trunks into a giant of the Ice Age through their creativity and innovative solutions.

The entertainment value of this playground is the most significant part of this project. The trail along the shore of Lake Tiefwaren marks the beginning of a prehistoric safari, encouraging children to learn more about the undisputed rulers of the Ice Age. The mammoth playground then serves as a stop to playfully immerse oneself in that time and explore what has just been read on the equipment. The mammoth’s trunk invites everyone to slide and linger. To reach it, however, the back must first be climbed via various paths. The versatile playground offers more than just the slide and two tusks. There is plenty of space for building sandcastles or snowmen. A small mammoth calf as a spring rocker is the undisputed favorite among the audience. With its childlike charm and sweet eyes, everyone melts at first sight. Whether real mammoth calves had the same effect on the early humans of the time remains a fascinating question.

Back in the Ice Age, the little mammoth was already accompanied by huge glacial erratics in the cold steppes, which also found their place on the playground. But even the vegetation seems to come directly from the Ice Age. To create an even more authentic environment, hazelnut trees were planted. They serve more than one purpose – whether as a shade provider, a backdrop, or for a small snack break. All senses are involved here.

The playground arouses the desire for more snow and the icy season. We wish you a lot of fun on your trip to the Ice Age, whether in the cool winter air or on a hot summer day.

Villepinte is a small town in the region of Ile-de-France, northeast of Paris. Due to the favorable transport connections, the number of inhabitants is constantly growing and with it the development of new residential areas, such as the new eco-district Pepiniere. The approximately 13 hectare area offers attractive living space in a setting of landscaped green spaces, play and sports areas, as well as shops and services. A forest-like green belt surrounds the playground. Through the branches of the trees, oversized play sculptures from the world of tiny animals in the vicinity can be seen in bright colors. An approx. 5 m high squirrel forms the silhouette for an exciting climb and slide combination. An approx. 2.5 m wide hedgehog invites you to hide and climb and a 10 m long caterpillar to crawl through. All 3 sculptures have openings that let light into the interior and provide exciting views of the surroundings. Two butterflies with wingspans of up to 1.9 m invite you to seesaw. Large flowers, acorns and leaves complete the small animal world and encourage all kinds of role-playing games.

Apenheul is a medium-sized zoo specialized in keeping primates in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. 30 different species are kept here in an exemplary manner. The animals are housed without bars, romp through the forest and inhabit their own islands, sometimes in large groups. The zoo founded the Apenheul Nature Conservation Fund (ANF) back in 1994. This fund supports nature conservation projects around the world to protect monkeys and their natural habitats. In the midst of various monkey enclosures, the children can do as the monkeys do and climb, balance, slide, hide or rest in three tree houses in a large play jungle. A, quite literally, huge attraction is a three meter wide and five meter high wooden monkey head opposite the restaurant terrace. You can climb into the sculpture and observe your surroundings through its eyes and mouth. A large climbing forest peeks through between the trees behind the monkey head. Bridges and ropes connect towers and posts form countless circuits with different levels of difficulty. It is particularly exciting to crawl through a net tunnel between two tree houses at a height of round five meter while others stand under the tunnel. Even many adults cannot help themselves but join the hustle and bustle – they are right in the middle of it.

What do flamingos, bulls and horses have in common? Actually not that much. However, there are places where you can find them together in one spot. Like at the rough and sunny south coast of France. To be more precise, the Camargue, also known as the »wild west« of France. Here the cowboys and cowgirls of the vast plateau herd French bulls on their white horses. Which, in contrast to their Spanish cousins, have upwards pointing horns and less temperament. Thousands of flamingos enjoy warmth on the shoreline, which are a highlight in this area with their bright pink plumage. The area with its unique flora and fauna inspired us to create a playground that shows these special features thematically.

In Pérols, near Monpellier, a large black bull is the heart of the playground and invites you to play from afar. It not only offers exciting climbing opportunities, but also an adventurous view over the entire area. Smaller climbing animals near the bull also offer fun for younger guests and encourage them to playfully walk a mile in the shoes of French cowboys and cowgirls. Here you can slide and romp around to your heart’s content. Children can herd the bulls on the white horses or try to catch them with friends. The only limit here is your imagination.

But the flamingos are also a symbol of this area. Thousands of them walk through the high reed beds on the shorelines of the national park with their graceful legs. Based on this, a varied obstacle course leads across the playground. The matching floor gives you the feeling of actually being in the Camargue wilderness. The course helps developing coordination, dexterity and endurance and ends on the bull’s thigh to create a transition without interrupting the game flow. The flamingos themselves are also represented in the playground as a life-size sculpture and seesawing opportunities, ready to take to the children high up in the sky.

The Camargue has moved a little closer to Pérols thanks to the themed playground design. The city has gained another attraction that makes a nice destination for families with children.

The small but varied zoo in Luckenwalde is changing its face. On the initiative of the young, committed managing director Mr. Herrmann, in addition to the modernization of the enclosures, the redesign of the playground equipments on the site should ensure a greater flow of visitors. With the help of a private sponsor from Luckenwalde, a big step could unexpectedly quickly be taken. They raised the donation for the new playground, which opened at the end of 2020. SIK-Holz® took over the planning and construction of the equipments and together with the building yard of the city of Luckenwalde, the playground equipments were assembled and installed in a very short time.

The zoo’s motto «Animals up close» is fully reflected in the new play area. The different devices are each associated with a species of animal in the zoo. A big, friendly bear greets you at the edge of the playground. With its mischievously pointed snout, it is an ideal photo opportunity for visitors. A meerkat guards the sandpit and next door a macaque perched on a post between two playhouses. Here, sand and role play can be pursued extensively. And if you want to imitate the monkeys, you can swing from house to house via a net. The peacock play area for older children provides a greater challenge. It can be climbed directly from the path. A balancing course with elements of varying difficulty leads to the play tower, which in turn can be conquered via various stairways. A slide at the end of the tower completes the entire experience. Another flagship of the zoo are its lynxes. A lynx has found its place on the swing beam and is comfortably dozing into the day. Bees stand ready for take-off on a double springer and an alpaca patiently waits to be climbed by the children and included in their play.

With the new playground, the zoo in Luckenwalde has gained another attraction and has come one step closer to its goals.

The world of dinosaurs has been fascinating us since childhood. Whether they were giant herbivores or dangerous hunters, almost everyone had one of them in their children’s room. The extinct reptiles stimulate people’s imagination. With constantly new bone finds, palaeontologists draw an ever more accurate picture of these animals, their behavior and habitats. Anyone who has ever seen movies like »Jurassic Parc« would like to pick up a brush and look for new species by themselves.

Since the new season in 2022 children can dig by theirselves at the Danish amusement park »Djurs Sommerland«. In addition to roller coasters and aqua park, giant swings and many other attractions, the fantastic new »Dinosaur Land« has now opened. Between life-size dinosaurs and a T-Rex roller coaster, children can enter a playground full of fossils to discover and dig free. A wide range of play values leads them through a world of dinosaur science. The centerpiece is build by large climbing facility, on which the children can explore different ways through the dinosaur laboratory, over the scaffolding of the excavation site or through a wild landscape of boxes. Different tube slides leads them back down to the playground just for discovering new ways back up. In the water and sand areas they can dig for fossils and uncover whole parts of dinosaur skeletons. You can even find a whole triceratops skull here. But there are also other offers, such as balancing on bones, »riding« on a Parasaurolophus or swinging between bones.

We are delighted that such a diverse and atmospheric play area has been created in »Djurs Sommerland«. So don’t miss out on this experience if you’re traveling in Denmark.

Every two years, the Ministry of Economics, Labor and Energy awards the Design Prize. This honors outstanding products, design achievements and concepts from companies located in Brandenburg.

This year, SIK-Holzgestaltungs GmbH won the first prize in product design. Marc Oelker recieved the award on November 26th, 2021 in Potsdam. We are proud to be able to create a unique product that makes our heart skip a beat and children’s eyes glow.

We built a stork made of robinia as a play device for the Algarve shopping center in Portugal. The design was roughly based on the logo of the shopping center, which shows a white stork on blue background. The finished stork is not white, but it shines bright like a diamond at the coast of Portugal since the middle of this year. Design and development were awarded on this occasion, because it takes more than design to make children´s dreams come true. Our designers, tower builders, organizers and everyone else involved in this project had to deal with a number of challenges. To make it work we had to take the sheer size of astonishing 11 meters, building the structure on an underground car park and the strong coastal wind into account. Thanks to excellent collaboration of everyone involved, we were able to design, manufacture, ship and assemble this stork in a relatively short time and without major problems. The entire SIK-Holz team did a wonderful job and can be very pleased with their work and feel honored.

We thank you for this award and view it as a chance to develop more excellent play equipment. There is much more to come and we will keep on trying to improve ourselves every day.

Ants whiz around the world on six legs. It is quite a feat to coordinate so many legs, considering how difficult it is for us to learn to walk on just two. At the new playground in the west of Halle, you will want another pair of legs if you want to conquer the obstacle course with a huge anthill.

In cooperation with the local landscape architecture company Haselbach, SIK-Holz® has brought the world of ants to life for children. In the middle of the large, shady trees, the huge climbing anthill rises up on which you become a little ant yourself.

The large entrance portal welcomes people and invites them into this exciting world. If you follow the invitation you will notice the refined structure of the facility. The obstacle course represents an ant road that leads to the anthill. For us humans, a blade of grass may be small, but to an ant it has to look like asbis as a tree trunk. The many obstacles that the hard-working little workers have to overcome every day can be visualized on the course with its climbing and balancing elements. In structures that are becoming more and more difficult, which also vary in height, all age groups find a way to live out their capabilities. It is important to move around in a jumping motion and not to lose your balance. This not only trains endurance and hand-eye coordination, but is also fun. Children of all ages can fight their way over wobbly tree trunks and ropes at their own pace to the anthill, the heart of the facility. The large anthill itself is a climbing paradise that offers many opportunities both inside and outside. Climbing the five-meter-high pile is a great challenge, but one is happy to face it. During the ascent, you repeatedly come across huge wooden ants that smile happily at you and inspire you to get to the top. Giving up is out of the question in the world of little ants. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a great view of the entire complex. Inside there is a climbing system, which is also suitable for hiding. The play of light, especially when the sun is shining, takes you into another world. You can also relax here. If you want to go outside again, you can dare to descend with a swing via the climbing tunnel and the two slides. Two large swings next to the anthill complete the playground. So there are opportunities to move around for everyone, and people like to stay longer here.

When the legs get heavy from crawling around in the end of the day, not only the ants but also all children scurry home, only to come back rested the very next day.
