Parc Merl – A Playground on a Whole New Scale
The Largest Project in Our Company’s History
A project built to last. For children. For families. And for us.
Some projects are more than just an assignment. They mark a milestone and become part of a company’s own history. For SIK-Holz®, the new playground in Luxembourg’s Parc Merl is exactly that kind of project.
When it opened on 14 July, countless ideas, drawings and designs were transformed into an extraordinary place filled with movement, imagination and connection. A place that children can discover anew time and again – and one that fills our entire team with immense joy and a special sense of pride.
Parc Merl is more than an impressively large play landscape. It is the biggest and most ambitious project SIK-Holz® has ever completed. For us, it is a true flagship project: a showcase for our experience, our creative and technical craftsmanship, and what can be achieved when consulting, planning, engineering, production and installation work closely together.
7,500 Square Metres of Adventure
More than a year of intensive planning, engineering, production and installation went into this extraordinary play landscape. Covering approximately 7,500 square metres and representing a total investment of around four million euros, this new playground in Luxembourg sets new standards.
Towers rising more than nine metres into the air, extensive bridges, varied climbing and balancing areas, tube slides, large net structures and a completely reimagined world of swings offer children of all ages an ever-changing range of play opportunities.
This is not a collection of individual, standardised play structures. It is a cohesive world of discovery and adventure.
Parc Merl invites children to climb, balance, test their abilities and embark on adventures together. Movement, nature and imagination come together to create a play environment with a character and identity all its own.
A Playground for Everyone
From the very beginning, one of the project’s central goals was to create a play environment accessible to as many children as possible. Inclusion was therefore not added as an afterthought; it was embedded in the fundamental design from the outset.
The design was developed in close cooperation with CCNAB Adapth, Luxembourg’s national competence centre for accessibility in the built environment. Together, we created a play environment that brings children with and without physical disabilities together and makes shared play a natural part of the experience.
Different surfaces, including EPDM and sand, accessible ramps, wide paths and carefully designed transitions ensure that the various play areas are easy to reach. Wheelchair-accessible spaces between the play structures facilitate participation. One of the slides allows children to transfer from their wheelchairs, while a wheelchair-accessible stepped ramp enables an accompanying adult to reach the bottom of the slide quickly.
The result is a place where inclusion does not need to be explained – it is simply part of everyday life.
An Exceptional Achievement by the Entire SIK-Holz® Team
The scale of this project was extraordinary even for us. Over many months, numerous colleagues from a wide range of departments worked together to bring it to life.
From the first design concepts and technical engineering to skilled production and on-site installation, Parc Merl demanded the highest levels of creativity, precision, flexibility and coordination. Many components and play features were designed and manufactured specifically for this location.
The project challenged us professionally, inspired us to develop new solutions and brought us even closer together as a team. Above all, it demonstrated the strength that comes from having all of SIK-Holz®’s expertise working together under one roof.
In every sense of the word, Parc Merl is a flagship project: one whose impact extends far beyond its location and which serves as a powerful demonstration of the extraordinary play environments we can create together.
Achieving Something Great Together
A project of this scale can never be created by one organisation alone. Its success is founded on the commitment, experience and mutual trust of everyone involved.
We would like to express our particular thanks to our project partners: the City of Luxembourg; landscape architects Schwarze und Partner of Krefeld; and landscaping contractor Supinor.
From the initial design to the final installation, everyone worked in partnership, with a solution-oriented approach and tremendous mutual respect. This shared understanding and the trust among everyone involved made a decisive contribution to successfully turning a project of this magnitude into reality.
A Milestone Built to Last
When we look at the completed playground today and see children conquering its towers, balancing across bridges, swinging together and enthusiastically discovering its many opportunities for play, we know that every single day of work was worthwhile.
For SIK-Holz®, Parc Merl is far more than the largest project in our company’s history to date. It is a milestone and a visible expression of what defines us as a company: bespoke design, solid craftsmanship, technical expertise, many years of experience and a passion for creating exceptional play environments for everyone.
This flagship project represents the trust placed in us by our clients and partners, the achievements of our entire team and a collaboration in which everyone involved worked consistently towards a shared goal.
We are immensely proud to have brought Parc Merl to life together. And we are delighted to have created this exceptional playground – a place that brings people together and will give generations of children joy, movement and unforgettable experiences.
