Spoons out, imagination on: in the heart of Hamburg-Stellingen (Eimsbüttel district), an extraordinary play space has been created on around 4,000 m² after intensive planning and a lengthy implementation phase. The “Soup Pot Playground” owes its name to a very special location – it sits on top of the A7 motorway deck – and it feels just as special as it sounds.

Movement, creativity and adventure come together here. Whether on wheels, on foot or climbing: children and young people find a wide range of opportunities to try things out, let off steam and be active together. The offering is complemented by lovingly designed play equipment made from robinia wood, instantly sparking the imagination. At the heart of the playground is a large climbing and hideaway beet with seating – a meeting place to catch one’s breath, observe and keep on playing.

All around, there is playing, swinging, balancing and splashing: in the sand kitchen, children “cook,” crawl through cucumbers and swing on vegetable spring rockers. The long climbing and balancing course challenges skill and courage, while the zip line and basket swing provide speed, floating moments and feelings of pure joy – a real highlight for young and old alike.

The result is a modern, diverse play and activity space that invites everyone to join in, explore and come back again. At the opening, many children arrived with skates and scooters, joined by the head of the Eimsbüttel district office, Ms Böseler – and immediately turned the playground into what it is meant to be: lively, loud and full of joy.

With each passing day and every degree the thermometer rises, people’s longing for their gardens awakens. Because what could be more beautiful than getting lost in the midst of blooming splendor? But for a successful garden adventure, new inspiration and equipment are also needed. A visit to the garden center is therefore at the top of many people’s lists.

But this shopping trip can now become a shared family pleasure! Pflanzenkölle in Wildau provides the perfect setting for this. The new playground from SIK-Holz® in the entrance area invites little adventurers to the fun of discovery, while adults can browse in peace.

The playground offers a wealth of activities for all ages, promoting various skills and talents. Even the little ones are greeted by friendly insects and can begin their adventure in the vast meadow. For slightly older children, there are balancing and hiding opportunities for joint exploration. The climbing landscape, on the other hand, transports older kids into a sea of flowers where they can lose themselves.

The three radiant tulip blooms form the centerpiece of the facility, with challenging climbing structures and an impressive spiral slide. Even inside the blooms, the senses unfold: transparent roofs made of colored acrylic glass create a play of light and color, while the peepholes, inspired by dewdrops, release feelings of joy.

This playground brings the happiness of the garden directly to people and awakens the longing for their own green paradise. SIK-Holz® wishes all visitors blooming days and much joy on the new playground at the Wildau garden center.

The residential area “Fischbeker Heidbrook” in the southwest of Hamburg encompasses 800 housing units. The housing complex borders the nature reserve “Fischbeker Heide”. The two large play areas adopt the design language of the forest-surrounded suburban location and depict a “playable landscape”. However, they are separated by an access road to the residential area. The “Wiesengrund” (Meadow Base) play area is divided into four large play areas and a barefoot path. The toddler area for children aged 0–6 years offers opportunities for sand and role-playing, as well as climbing, sliding, and rocking. The other side of the barefoot path is equipped with an expansive climbing-balance combination and a tall slide tower for children aged 6–12 years. The play areas are complemented by a swing area with a trampoline, which is situated as a separate island in the meadow. The “Boskett” (Small Forest) play area is a generously designed lawn with hammocks for relaxation. Slacklines are either permanently installed or can be attached to standalone posts. The play offerings in this area are further enhanced by two giant swings for all generations.

On April 14th, the Brandenburg Garden Show 2022 in Beelitz has opened it’s gates for visitors. SIK-Holz® accepted the challenge to design the play areas planned for this great event. With our play equipment made of natural robinia wood we were able to design different spaces of joy and ensure lively visitor interest. One of the design tasks was the inclusion of older play structures into the new concept. This way, well-preserved components could be reintroduced and used again sustainably.

New ideas and concepts were also developed especially for the LAGA (garden show). The main focus of the design was to offer a maximum of pleasure for the residents and visitors of Beelitz. Thus, the region is also enriched in terms of tourism. Long before the official opening of the playground, there was great interest in the resulting equipment, which reflects that our goals have been achieved. With a variety of playing ideas, everyone will find the right thing without feeling bored. A ten meter high slide tower forms the center of this diverse play landscape. Designed as a bunch of white asparagus, it invites the visitor to come closer. A playing landscape spreads out around it, which appeals to a wide variety of skills. Whether big or small, old or young, with or without disabilities, everyone is involved in the game. Climbing, swinging, see-sawing, sliding, turning, jumping, doing sports, diving into fantasy worlds, everything is available. But not only asparagus was staged thematically. Other special features of the city of Beelitz should also be included in the design. Historically, the city has been a Slavic settlement. Their origin is based on those and therefore cultural elements of the Slavs have found their way into the design of both the toddler and the sports area. In addition, there is a little herbalism on the swing pergola to discover with its many different swing options. When it comes to music, visitors may explore the adjoining playgrounds. There are also balancing structures and sculptures, that simply blend in with the environment in their naturalness. These can be found at various points on the LAGA site. Because it is hard to put all the things in words that could be seen at the LAGA in Beelitz, wesuggest to visit it and get your very own impression of our play structures and all the other interesting things to see there. Enjoy!

There is now a lot of activity in the tenants’ gardens on General-Barby-Street in Berlin-Reinickendorf. After all, the seeds now have to go into the ground in order to harvest the first home-grown vegetables in a few weeks.

Between the tentants’ gardens there is a larger open space with benches, games and exercise facilities. The old furishings had got long in the tooth and had to be renewed. Inspired by the surroundings of an intact community garden colony, landscape architect Katharina Niproschke designed a new playground focused on «young vegetables», in close cooperation with the Berlin office of SIK-Holz®. The new playground looks like a large wooden vegetable path between two large birch trees. It is divided into different zones in order to enable age-appropriate play. In addition, there is a fenced sand area for small children up to three years of age with sand and water games and a small garden hut for role-playing. The lovingly designed fence with applications and sculptures from the gardener’s realm separates the toddler area from the more activity-focused play equipment for older children. Outside the fenced garden colony, various animal sculptures invite the children to jump, bounce, swing and role-plays games together on three jumping boards designed as a «lettuce head» and «strawberry», a «chili rocker» and a «vegetable swing». For older children up to approx. 12 years of age, the central «allotment garden play unit» offers many activity incentives from climbing and balancing to shimmying and sliding. For these areas, wood chips were chosen to built the base. A small road network of paved paths with small traffic signs runs around the play areas. It is here where the children can learn how to move and behave in the world outside the playground with everything that «rolls». All those who do not play but want watch, talk or simply be out in the fresh air can sit on the numerous benches available in the area.

The Harzer Hexenstieg is a popular hiking trail in the heart of Germany. It leads from Osterode in the West Harz over the Brocken to Thale in the East Harz. Two alternative routes extend the hiking network to 152 km. Since 2014, twelf artistically designed adventure islands have been created along the hiking trail. In terms of content, regional topics are taken up on each island. Six stations were implemented by SIK-Holz in high quality craftsmanship based on drafts from design office, Bad Harzburg.

Torfhaus – Flora and fauna of the Harz Mountains
The eye-catcher at the Torfhaus is a huge wooden sculpture that represents a magical union of flora and fauna of the Harz Mountains. Huge ferns break through the stone floor and rise six meters into the sky – lynx, fire salamander, brown trout, pygmy owl and dragonfly travel along on the ferns. Other oversized wooden ferns accompany visitors on their way into the national park towards Brocken and present literary natural quotations.

Oderteich – Mrs. Holle
At this point you can find the often sung about and written about Mrs. Holle, designed in blue-green watercolors and rooted in the ground. Dragonflies, which are typical for this location, adorn her face.

Jordanshöhe – Ants
The place focuses on the ants, which as very small forest dwellers have an often underestimated importance for the ecosystem. On site there is a bank made of oversized spruce needles, two aphids and a red wood ant.

Hasselfelde – Cows
Reference is made here to the long tradition of farming on the meadows and in the forests of the upper Harz Mountains.

Schierke – Goethe train station
The former train station was right on the inner-german border and was used by the border guards as an illegal shelter. The seating elements at the transition between the mountain spruce forest and the forest-free Brocken top invite you to linger.

Osterode – Kiepenfrau (woman with a box)
The hikers can take a seat right next to a Kiepenfrau and rest with her. Or, when lifting a 40 kg box, you can feel how difficult it is for the energetic women, popularly known as «Harz camel», to drag.

Another stop in the Harz National Park is the HohneHof nature experience center.

An old farmhouse stands in the middle of the Rheine nature zoo. Inside, you have your own little «mouse» world. The indoor playground primarily picks up on the connection between children and mice. In addition to observing real mice, the children can playfully imitate the behavior of the mice. The main focus is on climbing, dangling and hiding. But also fine motor movements are encouraged by topic-related meaning games, distributed over the entire scope. The toddler area, consisting of a small course, visually depicts the natural habitat of the mice. This is followed by a climbing and hiding facility for small children. It visually represents the transition between the natural habitat of the mouse and an environment shaped by human hands, which the mice have also successfully conquered as cultural successors. The core of the play area are accessible boxes and barrels, which are connected by a mesh tunnel. The play area meanders from the ground to the attic. Once at the top, the children can slide back down to the lower floor or watch the animals in the zoo through the attic windows. To counteract the darkness, there are always «feeding holes» on the boxes. Visitors can take a break in the adjacent cafe. Here too, of course, little wooden mice dance around on the tables.

Children and adults can experience an educational journey through the world of the capercaillie and other animals from the forest, moor, heather and orchard meadows on the playground at the castle in Doberlug / Niederlausitz. The animals have recently become home there again.

The playground is divided into two areas. In the forest area, the capercaillie nest, as a meeting point and climbing device, is the central element. Various climbing and balancing paths extend from the nest. The posts on the forest path are assigned to different tree species. Movment games and competitions can be organized here that are varied and educational at the same time. The heather path roams through the blooming heather with various balancing elements. On the posts there are appliqués of the flower of the «common heather» in different stages of development. Nets for resting are integrated into the moor path. Here the posts are designed as «cotton grass». Other learning islands, such as the size comparison with local animals, a feeler box, a marble run and a bench with wingspan, frame the climbing area.

On the second area, visitors to the playground are introduced to the world of orchards. A large tree house stands for a large apple tree that you can climb into and slide down using a climbing pole. An oversized apple grove invites you to turn around together. The bumblebee nest with its many bumblebees is an Eldorado to crawl and hide. But there are also insights into the world of bumblebees, bees and other insects that are of great importance for nature. The small creatures can be observed through peep tubes.

A Spreewald kingdom opens behind the entrance gate of the same name in front of the old town of Lübbenau. The playground depicts typical aspects of the Spreewald and offers a rich area of activity for all age groups.

An underwater world lies behind the entrance gate with climbing fish for small children and a water play unit. The main feature of the playground is the net and fish trap paradise. High and low Spreewald houses are connected by a maze of tunnels, bridges, ropes and nets. This results in many play paths that symbolize the flow-like paths of the Spreewald. A stork sits in a nest on a roof, barrels for crawling through and hiding lie beneath the houses with a hammock between them for relaxing. Outside the play area there is a triple swing and a basket swing for small children near the underwater world. Besides the large play area, three themed playhouses, a linseed oil stall, gherkin stall and a large boat repair shop provide plenty ofspace for quiet role playing games and sensory games as well as space to sit and relax. The spacious playhouses are easily accessible for wheelchair users. Behind the play areas, large haystacks invite young people to climb and chill out. There is a fitness island and a Kneipp facility for adults.

The playground is an attractive place for locals and tourists, as a look at the press shows. During the season it is visited by around 300–400 children and adults every day. On the occasion of the Architecture Day in Brandenburg on June 28, 2020, the playground made it into the TOP 30 of the selected buildings.

The project was implemented according to a draft and in cooperation with the office Subatzus & Bringmann GbR from Großräschen.

In the east of the Altkönigsblick district in Riedberg, a large playground and grassy area have been created from around 7 ha of farmland.

The Beuerlein & Baumgartner office in Frankfurt / Main started planning the playground in 2013. European hamsters had settled in the area. Since they are under nature protection, the planning was stopped for the time being. European hamsters, which are under nature protection, brought the project to a standstill for the time being. Finally, only two animals were sighted. These were successfully relocated after 5 years, so that planning was resumed in 2018.

Today children can run along with wild flowers and a large variety of insects around the integrated playground which is based on a farm theme. The entrance features an accessible playhouse combination with sandpits and sensory games as well as seats. Next to it, a giant climbing tractor with a hay cart invites children to climb, slide and role playing games. The area for older children begins behind a hedge. The large windmill with slide is the eye-catching feature. From the top you can enjoy a great view. Behind the windmill is a wooden crop field with balancing and climbing equipments as well as a belt bridge. A dual cable riderthat follows along the sloping terrain finishes off the play area.

In addition to a dog, a cat and a horse, the European hamster has also been given a proper place on the playground.
